Motion-Based Gait Analysis vs. Plantar Pressure: What Does Each Measure?

Motion-based gait analysis describes movement. Plantar-pressure measurement describes pressure at the foot's contact surface. They can support different questions in a podiatry assessment, but they are not interchangeable. An in-shoe device does not necessarily measure pressure: its sensing technology determines what it captures.

For a podiatrist comparing equipment, the starting point is the clinical question. Do you want to examine how the foot moves, where pressure is distributed, or both? Establish that before comparing dashboards, report formats, or the number of advertised parameters.

Is gait analysis the same as a pressure assessment?

No. Gait analysis is a broader assessment of walking. It can combine clinical observation with movement measurements and, where relevant, pressure or other measurements. A laboratory service such as the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital's combines a clinical examination with camera-based movement analysis and additional instruments. What does an in-shoe motion system capture?

Can you compare numbers from different systems?

Do not assume that similarly named outputs have identical definitions. Ask about the calculation, units, protocol, and validation evidence before treating them as equivalent.

Look for evidence at the parameter level, not just a headline accuracy figure. Research on the APDM inertial-sensor system, for example, examined validity and between-day repeatability for specific spatiotemporal measurements.
